In Northern Ireland for over three hundred years linen manufacture has been an important industry, particularly in the 18th and 19th centuries. Practically every town and village had a mill or a factory. By 1921 there were almost one million spindles and 37,000 looms, with over 70,000 directly employed, representing 40% of the registered working population, with closer to 100,000 people dependant on the linen industry. At end of the 20th century only 10 significant companies, at most, remained employing 4,000 people.

The most recent addition to the Gallery complex was the Millennium Wing opened in January 2002. Designed by London based architects Benson & Forsyth and located on sites purchased by the Gallery in 1990 and 1996, the new wing introduced a new, second public entrance to the gallery from the busy thoroughfare of Clare Street in Dublin.

There are pictures and sculptures Jewellery and Prints on display both downstairs and upstairs. The majority of the pictures are smallish in size and go from 60`s retro to landscapes in different styles with animals, portraits, flowers, local scenes, photographs and more contemporary work. The Very Small Gallery will also take a deposit to secure a piece for you until you are ready to collect it., useful when there is a wedding , birthday, Christmas or just a special occasion.
