Dictionaries
From the dawn of time people have always tried to teach one another knowledge they had. Since oral information is distorted in time, humanity came up with making images of accumulated knowledge, thoughts and messages on more reliable data carriers: stones, clay tablets, papyruses, paper sheets. Modern world is full of different information; new words and facts, terms with meanings unknown to common people appear out of nowhere. In such cases we have to seek information in dictionaries.
Dictionaries are – what a surprise - reference books. In dictionaries we can find answers on almost anything. Dictionaries have very simple and understandable structure – terms are arranged in alphabetical order, so that we can find everything we need in a couple of seconds.
Dictionaries can be divided into two groups. First group are “linguistic dictionaries”, also known as “language dictionaries”. In these you can find translations of words and terms as well as get to know their meanings, semantic content and usage variants. These dictionaries must be present in every house, for only they can give you short and precise explanations of terms and/or their translations to every language you need.
Second group of dictionaries are so-called “encyclopedias”. Such dictionaries are full of different information.
In these dictionaries you can find answers on questions of every possible kind. For example – there are geography, biology, physics, medicine, law, chemistry, zoology and many other types of encyclopedias. Such kinds of dictionaries are helpful when you don’t want to just specialize in one field, but to also be a well-educated person and know about the world around us.
